Biochemical and agronomical responses of grapevines to alteration of source-sink ratio by cluster thinning and shoot trimming Bragantia
Mota,Renata Vieira da; Souza,Claudia Rita de; Silva,Camila Pinheiro Carvalho; Freitas,Gustavo de Faria; Shiga,Tânia Misuzu; Purgatto,Eduardo; Lajolo,Franco Maria; Regina,Murillo de Albuquerque.
The control of leaf to fruit ratio by the practice of entire clusters removal from the vine upon berry set has been used in traditional vineyards in order to regulate yield and to improve chemical composition of the berries. Although this practice has been settled in temperate zones, little is known about grapevines behavior in tropical growing areas. The aim of this work was to evaluate the biochemical and agronomical responses of two Vitis vinifera cultivars (Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon) grown in Caldas, Minas Gerais, Brazil, a new winegrape region. Grapevines were submitted to cluster thinning (0%, 50% and 75% of cluster removal) and trimming treatments (trimmed and untrimmed) imposed at pea size stage. The source-sink alteration by fruit removal and...

In-row spacing and shoot thinning for ‘Chardonnay’ grapevines in the south of Minas Gerais, Brazil Scientia Agricola
Almeida,Luciana Wilhelm de; Mota,Renata Vieira da; Souza,Cláudia Rita de; Silva,Letícia Pereira; Fernandes,Fernanda de Paula; Mendonça,Tânia dos Reis; Peregrino,Isabela; Regina,Murillo de Albuquerque.
ABSTRACT: The quality of sparkling wine reflects the climate and management of vineyard, since these factors affect grape development, berry composition, and base wine composition. ‘Chardonnay’ vines were subjected to five in-row spacing distances (0.5; 0.75; 1.0; 1.50; and 2.0 m) combined with and without shoot thinning. For each in-row spacing, vines were thinned to 5, 8, 10, 15, and 20 shoots per plant. Vegetative growth, yield, berry composition and base wine composition were analyzed for two years. Vines with decreased in-row spacing, presented fewer clusters and malic acid content in berries, mostly related to the shading effect. Shoot thinning increased bud fruitfulness and decreased leaf area per meter, leaf area per plant, and leaf layer number....

Physiological responses and production of 'Syrah' vines as a function of training systems Scientia Agricola
Favero,Ana Carolina; Amorim,Daniel Angelucci de; Mota,Renata Vieira da; Souza,Claudia Rita de; Regina,Murillo de Albuquerque.
Plant architecture and its interaction with agricultural practices and environmental constraints is determinant for grapevine canopy structure, which is related to carbon assimilation, bud fertility and fruit quality. In this context, this study evaluated the performance of field-grown 'Syrah' grapevines conducted by two management systems: Vertical Shoot Position (VSP) or a modified Geneva Double Curtain (GDC), in Pirapora, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, during the winters of 2007 and 2008. The evaluations of leaf area, water relations and net CO2 assimilation were made at the end of the ripening period. Yield per vine and per hectare were estimated and mean berry weight and diameter, total soluble solids, pH and titratable acidity were evaluated during...

Vine balance: a study case in Carménère grapevines Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Fredes,Claudio; Moreno,Yerko; Ortega,Samuel; Von Bennewitz,Eduardo.
Vitis vinifera cv. Carménère is a vigorous variety of grapevine that requires high temperatures and luminosity for achieving optimal phenolic maturity and herbal aromas, which has been reported to signifcantly delay harvest in Chile. This research was developed under the hypothesis that canopy management, vigor and crop load could modify the productive and vegetative relationships for obtaining early or late ripening and achieving vine balance. The aim of this study was to determine the vine balance and the time of ripeness for Carménère grapevines. Different vigor and canopy managements were evaluated. The study was conducted in the Central Valley of Chile during the 2007 to 2008 season with own-rooted Carménère vines trained to a four-cane vertical shoot...
